Life Aboard

"Sailing? That's all rum cocktails and lazing around!"

So how's life aboard? Well, it's not all hard work, but isn't exactly mojitos and sun loungers either. Everything you'd find in a normal flat / apartment, Calypso has as well - the only difference being that this dwelling moves around, so there's the added equipment for motoring, sailing, producing our own fresh water and also electricity. We normally spend a few hours a week on general maintenance - cleaning filters, changing the engine oil, tightening the occasional bolt or nut that suddenly appears on deck - but being more-or-less a new boat, the main systems all do what we need them to, when we need them to. Sweet.

Don't get me wrong - there are some key differences to living ashore. We kayak to get our groceries...

And finding space to hang the laundry on a rainy day can be a challenging....

Sure, we have the occasional rude 2am wake up call when the anchor's dragging and we suddenly find ourselves with less water around our keel than there should be, but it's no different to having land-based neighbours throw an impromptu all-night party, or those lovely folks who bring home a not-so-lovely newborn. When those sunsets come along and we have a front row seat though, it really confirms we wouldn't have it any other way.....

  1. Having fished the Pacific and built a few game boats. May I suggest
a rubber or bungie on yourtrolling lines
You see when you hook into a tuna or dorado and you are below and the boat is at7 knots, it needs that to stop the hook tearing out
    So many fish, take rice:))
And never leave pelegics in sun because the brown meat near spine can kill, quickly
still I am sureyou know all this:))
